The Mind Gym - Review by Chase McGill

Mind Gym: An Athlete’s Guide to Inner Excellence
By Gary Mack and David Casstevens
Review by Chase McGill
Coaches always tell their players that it’s “all in your head kid” or “keep your head in the game playmaker”. I remember last year that they would always say that to me and I wouldn’t ever know exactly what they meant-until I read this book. Mack and Casstevens to a phenomenal job at explaining how really “keep your head in the game” by using real-life athletes that explain how they perform so well.
Have you ever wondered how professional athletes are so good? Probably 90% of them would tell you that it’s all about the game in your head, not all about the game on the field. Yogi Berra was one of the most successful Yankees coach in the game of baseball because he understood the importance of the mental game. “Ninety percent of the game is half mental”. –Yogi Berra.
The Mind Gym has numerous influential former/current professional athletes who really explain the aspect of how to win. Bruce Jenner is one of America’s best track and field athletes of all time. He won the 1976 Olympics because of his intense training regimen of both mind and body. “You have to train your mind like you train your body” – Bruce Jenner.
Do you have a favorite sport that you love to play? Do you want to learn how to improve your playing level and one day maybe play with the best? It doesn’t matter if you play baseball, football, basketball, soccer, golf, or any sport at all; you will benefit from this book because your mind is in everything. That’s why I love this book. Mack and Casstevens don’t just focus on one particular sport; they took all sports into consideration when they wrote this.
Freshman year of my baseball season I did horrible. I was left handed so the coaches of course wanted me to pitch because lefties are so valuable in baseball. Physically I was strong, but mentally I was crippled. When I came up to the pitcher’s mound, all I could think about was not throwing strikes or over throwing the ball. I literally couldn’t pitch more than two innings without getting cut from the mound. During the fall I found this life-saving book. I read it within a couple of days and applied everything they had talked about. Now sophomore year I’m a great pitcher who can pitch all seven innings no problem.
The Mind Gym is a blessing. It helps me every day with everything in my life, especially sports. There’s many more game changing lessons that are taught in this book. So if you want to be playing next to the guy you looked up to when you were a little kid, get Mind Gym: An Athlete’s Guide To Inner Excellence!
