Not everyone finds true love, and not everyone goes out and tries, but in The Magical Adventures of a Single Life by Kristen McGuiness, she writes this story as a book of diary entries within 50 weeks. Going on 51 dates in 50 weeks is how Kristen searches for love. Kristen grew up in a not-so-normal family, which affected her early years of adulthood. After some bad experiences with loser boyfriends, she finds a new way to go about her search.
With the help of her friends, Kristen changes the way she lives her life and chooses paths for her future. After Kristen turns her life around, she acts as a role model for her readers.
The Magical Adventures of a Single Life shows how one small event in life can change your way of thinking and of going about living your own life.
The theme in this novel starts to stand out later in the book. Kristen makes a big change and learns the meaning of patience. She has to rely on God to help her find love. This true story is an adventure, and Kristen shows how she lives her everyday life. The genre aspects were the trial and difficulties she went through trying to find the perfect true love.
I love the way the author openly uses her own personal experiences as an example of finding love. She puts humor and character into this journey, which is just another reason to keep turning the pages in The Magical Adventures of a Single Life. Kristen writes a heart-felt story filled with her own style and emotions. As you read, you can easily connect with Kristen and other characters in her life.
Reading this book, I connected with the author in many ways. The setting is very descriptive, and Kristen’s attitude toward life and love helps the reader stand in her shoes, therefore understanding her perspective. Everyone with the ability to read should consider this book. Being suitable for men, women, and children, this novel needs to be read.
Kristen decided to turn this 50 week period of her life into a story, after having a heart-felt conversation with her father over the phone. He explains how important she is to him, and that if other people can go through the journey with her, she will potentially be spreading love to everyone. Kristen wanted to share her story of overcoming trials in life with others to show her version of living life. Being the only book she has ever published, Kristen feels “accomplished and renewed to share [her] experiences” (authors note).
The setting in The Magical Adventures of a single Life is in Los Angeles, California. This place is new to me because I am used to the culture of a small town in Michigan. The author tells the story in past tense because she is telling of her recent experiences. As you read, picturing the setting helps the reader understand the important connection between Kristen and the place in which she lives.
Knowing that all of the events and characters in this book are real, it makes this story easier to relate to. The relationships Kristen has with the other people in this book are very realistic. While reading the novel, the reader begins to place the very people in their life into the places of the characters, which shows the reader deeper conflicts in The Magical Adventures of a Single Life.
Kristen grew up in a one-parent family. Her father has been living in various prisons for drug cartel since she was only four years old. She never really had a solid relationship with her father, other than letters in the mail, and Sunday visits. Without a father figure living in the house with her, Kristen makes decisions that most people wouldn’t approve of. After waking up day after day alone, she begins to realize that she needs to find her true love; everyone else has. This is when Kristen starts her game: 51 dates in 50 weeks.
